Initiatives are in place to match the needs of the business community with local educational institutions to ensure the talent pool is ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.

A multitude of state and local programs, resources and institutions exist to assist in accomplishing these initiatives.

Tennessee Career Center Anderson County

Tennessee 's statewide Career Center System is sub-divided into 13 Local Workforce Investment Areas . These areas, which are administered by a local board, are clusters of counties whose labor market and other employment related factors are similar. Consequently, each area provides workforce development and career services based on local needs. The centers are used for:

  • Job Seekers looking for employment, a better job or a career change
  • Individuals that have or are going to lose their employment as a result of a business layoff or closure
  • Employers looking for assistance in hiring and retaining employees
  • Students and youth looking for assistance in making a career choice

Each center offers:

  • computerized labor market information
  • internet access
  • workshops
  • an online talent bank

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development can provide assistance in the recruitment of qualified job applicants. The Department also administers the Workforce Investment Act program, which could provide training assistance for those eligible participants.

Tennessee Job Skills
The Tennessee Job Skills (TJS) program is a workforce incentive grant program focused on enhancing employment opportunities and meeting the needs of new and existing industry. Through training, the program shall give priority to the creation and retention of high-wage jobs. Focus is on employers and industries that promote high-skill, high wage jobs for emerging, demand and high technology manufacturing occupations.

Incumbent Worker Training
The state may enter into an agreement with an employer to provide training to workers whose skills must be upgraded in order to avert worker dislocation. The state program may provide up to 100% of the training costs for this type of training.

Labor Market Information
The Labor Market Information LMI/Research and Statistics Section is the official source for all employment-related data for the state, the metropolitan areas and the individual counties. The section works directly with the U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics to gather core labor market data that is comparable to information gathered nationwide.

The Source
The Source is the most comprehensive and user-friendly source of labor market data in the state.  The interactive system contains a vast amount of information covering areas such as job demand, economic indicators, wages, census data and education/training programs. It also provides information on nearly 92,000 Tennessee employers.  Area profiles are also available by local workforce investment areas, metropolitan areas and counties.

Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program is a federally funded program that provides assistance to workers affected by job loss or their hours and wages are cut due to increased imports or a shift in production to a foreign country.

The Center for Industrial Services

The Center for Industrial Services is an industrial extension program of UT's Institute for Public Service. Designed specifically to assist business and industry, CIS strengthens the competitiveness of manufacturers by helping them:

Tennessee Manufacturing Extension Partnership (TMEP)

Assists manufacturing firms by providing engineers and scientists from NASA, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and public and private universities and colleges to address problems and support industry through the application of technology.

FastTrack Job Training Assistance

FastTrack Job Training Assistance is available for new and existing business and industry as an incentive by the State of Tennessee when associated with new investment for facilities, equipment and new job hires. Training can be:

Roane State Community College
Centers for Training and Development

Roane State 's Centers for Training and Development provide training and organizational development needs for business and industry in an eight county service area. The management, organizational and computer training is available for the following industry sectors:

Pellissippi State Technical Community College
Business and Community Services

Pellissippi State's Business and Community Services (BCS) extends the resources of the College to the business, industrial and general communities. Programs range from personal enrichment to advanced technology and industry-specific training. BCS also offers high-quality, short-term certificate programs for students who wish to upgrade their skills or gain additional certification in a particular area.

Both Pellissippi State and Roane State have reciprocal partnership agreements to provide area businesses with training assistance.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities

Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) partners federal laboratories with universities to develop technologies that improve existing products and manufacturing processes. ORAU brings together thousands of scientists, engineers and students from its 87 member institutions that engage in R&D efforts funded by the state.
